My Creative Space: Pinked

I treated myself to a pair of pinking shears the other day and I've been having fun using them on fabric brooches.  I screenprinted some huia birds, sewed them to an old blanket strengthened with interfacing, pinked the edges and sandwiched some ribbon in between.  They've turned out quite military, I wonder what they could be medals for...

I've also made some without ribbons - some round, some oval.  With their pinked edges they remind me of Shrewsbury biscuits!

My creative space: the owls are not what they seem

A day off calls for:
 Real coffee
Impractical silver boots
Saying hello to the pigeons
 And printing up a storm.
On my day off my lounge has been invaded by owls - I've been screenprinting a whole lot of these owl totes.  I might do some with a matching blue feather print next...or maybe some owls in a different colour...

My creative space: burgundy

I finished trimming, interfacing and zigzagging my big pile of burgundy feathers this afternoon and now they're all ready to be sewn on as patches, turned into brooches, used as bookmarks...

I'm having fun screenprinting coloured feathers instead of my usual black and white - I'm thinking bright red or gold might be then next colour I try.
And speaking of burgundy how red was the sunset last night!  So pretty.

My creative space: I'll pencil you in

The style I was painting my blanket labels in, all flat and blocky, was starting to drive me mad, they just didn't look like they did in my head.  So I decided to do a bit of experimentation, and to have a go at drawing them in a more detailed way in pencil, then washing over them with watercolour or gouache.  Here's my first one, which is still waiting to be painted:
And I miiiiight have bought some more blankets, purely for the labels.  Take a look at these beauties:
Love those fonts.

My creative space: red leaves

In my creative space today I've got my second attempt at this watercolour and gouache painting of some of the red leaves I've been collecting.  You can see my first attempt in the background here:
I'm hoping to do a version with green leaves too, so that I can have something vaguely christmassy for my Millicent Crow stall.  Although hearing "All I want for Christmas is yooooou" in a shop the other day made my skin crawl!
I like all the reddish splotches on the envelopes I've been using as palattes.
My next project involves these - guinea fowl feathers.  Much as I wish I had a flock of guinea fowl I bought these beauties off Trade Me, from someone in Nelson.  Crazy the things you can buy on the internet!
How about you, what have you been making?  Got any christmassy projects on the go?

My creative space: willow pattern

Today in my creative space I've been printing up a storm.  I just got a whole lot of lovely sturdy linen cheaply because it was a bit water damaged and I've been trying out some blue ink on it.

The colours reminded me of willow pattern.

I'll probably sew it up into some more pouches - I've been thinking about making myself a screen printed obi-style belt too - using the same pattern you can see in these photos.

My Creative Space

Pinch punch first of the month!  For the start of a month of My Creative Space I thought I'd show you my creative space, Millicent Crow HQ.  It's really just a desk in the corner of my room and it's usually covered in drawing, painting, sewing, screen printing, leaves and seedpods that I'm drawing...and a cat.

At the moment I'm working on inking a drawing of Shackleton and Hurley for a project I'm doing with Mr. Millicent Crow
I've also got some Millicent Crow bunting - a failed experiment at making bunting for a stall in the middle of the night!

I've been enjoying the Halloween remnants around the neighbourhood today:

Especially this little grapefruit-o-lantern my neighbours put out on the porch that we share.  Cute!

My creative space: pouches and more pouches

I've been making mountains of pouches this week, for my stall at Kraftbomb this Sunday.

They're denim and canvas and they all have screen printed patches.  I've been having lots of fun with that green ink.

I've also been thinking about making myself this garment here:
It's the two-way stole from this book:
Have any of you made it before?  Looks like it'll be fun as long as tracing the pattern from the pattern sheet doesn't give me square eyes.

My creative space: birds of a feather

I finally finshed the drawing I've been working on at lunchtimes:
And today, on my day off, I coloured it in Photoshop:
I'm going to get it printed A4 sized like these ones.
Then I went up the road and had a coffee and started the next one in the series:
How about you, what have you been working on?
 Happy Thursday to you!

My creative space: Cardinal

Today in my creative space I've been working on this drawing:

And giving it a makover in Photoshop.

I was going to treat myself to a coffee this afternoon but I decided to spend my coffee money on a couple of tea towels from the op shop instead.  The colours of this one kind of match my drawing:
I think the tea towels are destined to become pouches.
I've also been enjoying my uncharacteristically tidy desk.  Don't worry, the rest of the house is still a tip!
Here it is while I was in the middle of redrawing this picture.  I'm hoping to get it, and the cardinal I've been drawing, printed soon.
Oh and I'm going to be stallholdin' at Kraftbomb's 4th birthday this Sunday!  It's 11-2 at the Grey Lynn Community Centre on Richmond Road.  I'd better rustle up a few more pouches for my stall before then!
