Deco details

We just got back from a Queen's Birthday jaunt to Wellington, Napier and Gisborne, and as we were leaving Napier we happened upon this wonderful art deco building.  It has the most beautiful details:

 

With its curved entranceway and pastel colours it reminded me of a seashell.  Next time I'll have to go during the week and take a look inside! 

City sights

Sometimes I like imagining myself living right in the central city, maybe in a beautiful historic apartment block where cats ride in the elevator. I love the details on the old stone buildings in town; here are some of my favourites:

But wait there's more...

I added some more named buildings to my collection yesterday; these ones are in Newmarket. They're all the same kind of age...from the 1920s? '30s? and have the best names.
Others I found were "Sunola" and "Glenross"...

This one's called "Tihutahi."

This one is divided into two flats. I love the way the letters in the name have only been painted on the side belonging to one flat. Looks like that creeper's intruding beyond the dividing line, though. It says "Burleigh" under there.

Naming rights

I love a good named building. I mean the kind where the name is carved out of stone, or painted on, rather than on a big neon sign. When we lived in Melbourne I liked the way lots of the terrace houses had names; I collected the ones that were named after New Zealand places. The only ones I can remember now are Clyde and Kaiapoi. We lived in one called Rathdowne I think, for all of one night, before we ran away with all our belongings on the tram...but that's another story!

I think that's actually a new sign. But this one's all about the window boxes.

I love that font. Who said blue & green should never be seen without a colour in between?

Monday

I had to go into the city today to do some errands and I decided to pretend I was a tourist in my own town. Here are some of the things I saw...

Inner city pretty

I had a bit of time to kill in town on Monday so I took some photos of some of the beautiful buildings that are squeezed in among the monstrosities there.



Back in the day I used to deliver pizza in the city and I remember that one of these last two had cats that rode in the lift.
