My creative space: the owls are not what they seem
A day off calls for:
Real coffee
Impractical silver boots
Saying hello to the pigeons
And printing up a storm.

Happy Thursday!

Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie
I needed a quick making things fix this afternoon so I screenprinted some more of my feather patches, in a burgundy ink this time. When they were all laid out I thought the colour of the calico looked like a delicious pie crust. The way the cat was weaving around them when I was trying to take photos made me think she wouldn't have minded eating a giant feather pie!

Save the date!
The next Auckland Art & Craft Fair will be on the 29th of June and I'm very happy to announce that Millicent Crow will be there! Updates on the Fair can be found here on the Auckland Art & Craft Fair blog. I've been brainstorming some ideas for some new goodies to make for my stall, and I really should fire up the silk screen and print some more of these:Thursday, November 8, 2012
My creative space: willow pattern
The colours reminded me of willow pattern.
I'll probably sew it up into some more pouches - I've been thinking about making myself a screen printed obi-style belt too - using the same pattern you can see in these photos.

Lime and passionfruit
I've been trying to do some screen printing troubleshooting lately and I've been finding that putting a towel under the screen as one book suggested is helping the lines to come out a bit clearer. I thought I'd treat myself to some cheery lime green ink and I've been printing up a storm - I think I'll turn these prints into brooches. The lime's a pretty good match for the leaves of this passionfruit flower that's sitting on my desk, waiting to be drawn too!

My creative space: in progress
Pouches with giant feathers and smaller ones with leaves
Piles of printed fabric waiting to be turned into pouches
And fabric brooches waiting for brooch backs.
I'm also putting the finishing touches on a drawing of a magpie, racing to finish my new zine. How about you, what have you been making?

My creative space: dots on sticks brooch
I've been playing round with the new fabric I've printed from this screen, and I decided to make one of the motifs from it into a brooch.
Here it is on my coat - I think it'll be a good replacement for this brooch, which I lost in Dunedin earlier in the year. Today I've also been stitching up some dinosaur patches and I've got plans for a pouch sewing bee. Hope you're having a good Thursday!

Printed
I tried out my new silk screen the other day and this is the fabric I printed - a piece of calico about the size of a sheet. It was fun printing the repeating pattern, although I did have a bit of printing rage trying to print the repeat pattern in a small corner of my bedroom! Now, what to make with it? I'm thinking totes, pouches, and a few brooches?

My creative space: giant embroidery hoop
A year or so ago I found, in an op shop, the biggest embroidery hoop I'd ever seen:
I've finally got around to using it - I've screen printed some giant feathers and used it to frame them...might need a bit more ironing methinks!
Here are the feathers up close

My creative space: dotty
I've just made this fabric, that I screen printed the other day, into this spotty dotty canvas tote bag.
It kiiiind of goes with my weird spotty dotty trousers. I bought these on a whim from the op shop the other day in my frustration at finding trousers that fit/are comfy. I had high hopes for altering them somehow...they're a weird 3/4 length, baggy like pyjamas and kind of high-waisted. I've got a feeling though, that they might end up being reincarnated as zippered purses rather than a garment...I might just keep on wearing skirts all the time.

And I just bought one of these. It's wonderful, even if I am terrified of its sharpness.

Spotty
I bought a brand new blank silk screen the other day to replace my borer-ridden one and its first task was to make me some green polka dots. I cut a stencil for these and printed them on canvas...they're going to become a bag (with spotty dotty handles too). I do believe I have some sheer fabric in my stash that could make a matching top!
I've also been printing onto canvas with my stamps and fabric ink. The stamps came out a bit uneven on the textured fabric but I think they'd come out better on calico or something a bit lighter. Stay tuned to see what became of this stamped fabric!

Feather shirt
I needed a quick fix creative project the other day so I whipped out my silk screen and printed this feather on an old t shirt from the op shop:

I'll have to remember not to wear it with my feather print skirt...the next thing I'm hoping to do with this feather print is print it all over a piece of grey wool crepe that I have, then make that into a skirt or a dress. The logistics of printing a big piece of fabric in a small space are a bit tricky...maybe some outdoor printing is in order!
